"Levadas" are man-made water irrigation channels built by the very first settlers to carry and direct water to inaccessible farmland grounds. Today they are one of Madeira's greatest tourist attractions - providing nature walk lovers with a myriad of awesome, breathtaking and natural sceneries.

The Botanical Gardens main cable car station is approximately 7 minutes drive from Funchal and about 15 mins' drive to Monte Village. You can reach any of the stations either by car, taxi or by bus - namely BUS nrs. 29, 30, 31 (Botanical Garden) and BUS Nr. 22 (Babosas).

From Madeira Airport - going towards Funchal . take the dual carriageway following signs for FUNCHAL. Exit left at the turnoff for FUNCHAL/HOSPITAL/PORTO. Drive round along the roundabout and take the exit marked HOSPITAL/AVENIDA DO MAR. At the traffic lights, turn right towards Lido. Stay in the left-hand lane on the road "Estrada Monumental": In front of the Monumental Lido Hotel, keep to the left-hand lane and turn right, following the road to "Praia do Gorgulho" beach... and you will reach the Meliã Madeira Mare Resort & Spa which is located in between the TIVOLI MADEIRA and the PORTO MARE HOTELS.
